German bindery equipment manufacturer Palamides is to showcase its award-winning smartliner240 lay-flat book production system at Hunkeler’s Partner Innovationdays 2017.
Steve Giddins of UK distributor Perfect Bindery Solutions considers the new system to be one of the must-see breakthrough technologies for visitors to the twelfth edition of the event which hosts 80 independent manufacturers and runs from 20 – 23 February at the Messe Lucerne, Switzerland:
“The smartliner offers an entirely new eco-friendly option for commercial and inplant printers to produce short run on-demand lay-flat soft back books and book blocks for casing-in. It has an impressive format range from smaller than A6 to larger than A3 with spine thicknesses from just 3 millimetres right up to 40, so it’s perfect for anything from reports and discussion documents to conventional bookshelf publications or property prospectuses, coffee table tomes and photo books. But the big difference is that this machine needs so little in the way of adjustments or housekeeping maintenance because it runs cold glue delivered through a nozzle system, making it the perfect one-size-fits-all solution for printers who want to bring their bookbinding in-house to clawback revenue and sharpen turnaround.”
The Palamides smartliner240 is a single clamp system with a unique spine preparation station, automated cover scoring and feeding, touch-screen controls and a vertical delivery buffer. Because it operates with water-based cold glue, no venting is required, less power is used and the books are recyclable – hence its recognition in the Baden-Württemberg Environmental Awards in addition to the IF Product Design Awards and a Special Mention in the German Design Awards. It has a production capacity of 240 cycles/hour which, says Steve Giddins, makes it an attractive proposition to the larger bindery houses as well as entry-level printers:
“A system with this versatility and accessibility is also the perfect complement to higher volume production lines to fulfil those awkward shorter runs without breaking into longer runs or compromising quality. The smartflat technology signifies low energy consumption and extraordinarily high material efficiency – and another key feature is the smartliner240’s performance on a wide range of stocks, whether printed litho or digitally.”
